Another "Iranian hostages" ploy?
I had an unsettling thought.

Are the House Republicans withholding approval of the bailout, waiting for Obama to leave for the debate and McCain to stay behind, so they can credit McCain with "brokering" the agreement?

Possible. Another theory is that the Republicans are trying to derail the presidential debate, so in rescheduling it there wont' be enough time to reschedule the vice presidential debate. You mean Palin won't be on stage with Biden? Damn shame, that.

I don't have much doubt that Bush's meeting with McCain and Obama today was a political ploy. McCain's decision to suspend campaigning wasn't playing well, so Bush managed to get Obama off the trail so he couldn't take advantage of the opening. Most voters were okay with Obama continuing to campaign, but refusing an invitation from the president in a time of crisis wold e a step too far.

That might be the intent, but I think the narrative would have to change a lot within the next 24 hours for it to work.
Everything I've read in the mainstream media today has been to the effect that prior to McCain's arrival in Washington the agreement was pretty much a done deal, and that the breakdown of the agreement had as much to do with interference by presidential politics as by anything actually associated with Congress. Even if a deal finally goes through tomorrow morning, I can't see McCain coming out the hero. But I've been wrong before.
